1. Learn in small groups
Do not try to memorize 26 unrelated words at once. Work through these seven groups:
- A-D: Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, Delta
- E-H: Echo, Foxtrot, Golf, Hotel
- I-L: India, Juliett, Kilo, Lima
- M-P: Mike, November, Oscar, Papa
- Q-T: Quebec, Romeo, Sierra, Tango
- U-X: Uniform, Victor, Whiskey, X-ray
- Y-Z: Yankee, Zulu
2. Say every pair aloud
Look at the letter and speak the pairing: “A as in Alfa.” Hearing yourself creates an additional memory cue and builds confidence for real conversations.
3. Recall before revealing
Use a flash card with only the letter visible. Attempt the answer before turning the card over. Active recall is more useful than repeatedly rereading the list.
4. Mix the order
Alphabetical practice is useful initially, but communication rarely arrives in alphabetical order. Shuffle the cards once each group feels familiar.
5. Practice difficult spellings
Give extra attention to Alfa, Juliett, Quebec, Whiskey, and X-ray.
6. Use short daily sessions
Five focused minutes over several days is usually better than one long session. End each session by writing as many pairs as you can remember.
7. Test for complete mastery
When all seven groups feel familiar, take a mixed 26-question test. Review mistakes and repeat until every response is automatic.
